Beginner Blacksmithing

6 Week Class - One Night a Week

About the Class

For those who want to dive deeper into blacksmithing techniques: 6 weeks of 2 1/2  hour sessions, talking about nothing but blacksmithing. There is nothing virtual or digital about this experience, and there is everything rewarding about it.  Justin and Evan will lead you through the basics you need to know to be able to craft your own simple pieces, for your own home or gifts for others!  

No experience necessary.  

Taste of Blacksmithing recommended but not required for entry.  

Schedule

Week 1: Theme: Begin at the beginning.
Introductions, History and Terminology; Safety and Equipment 
Skills: Forging points and curls.
Project: Bean Hook

Week  2:
Theme: Practice, Practice, Practice. 
Skills: Forging points and curls; Spreading material.
Project: Bean Hook
​
Week 3:
Theme: Digging Deeper.
Skills: Further learning to spread material by making fishtail scrolls. 
Project: Four Hook Coat Rack
​
Week 4:
Theme: Expanding Knowledge
Skills: Continue working on spreading material, start working on the back plates for the coat rack.
Project: Four Hook Coat Rack

Week 5:
Theme: When it all comes together.
Skills: Constructing matching hooks for the Coat Rack. Final Assembly.
Project: Four Hook Coat Rack

Week 6:
Theme: The World is your Oyster
Skills: Asking questions.  What do you want to do next?  You can finish up projects or start something new.  Justin and Evan will demonstrate new skills (or review old!) upon request.

Details

  • Please wear closed-toed shoes and long pants while participating.  

​

  • Lunch is not provided.  Please pack a lunch or enjoy a delicious sandwich from nearby Pine Hill Orchards

​

  • If you have a blacksmiths hammer you've been wanting to try, bring it along!  Otherwise, all you need for the class will be provided. 

​

  • Available to all those ages 13 and up.

​

  • For students under 18, parental permission is required.

Rescheduling Policy

Class deposits are non-refundable. However, if you notify us up to two weeks (14 days) before class,  you may switch to a later session at no extra charge.
 
14 days before the class and later: If you would like to change classes within two weeks of the start date, there will be a fee equal to 50% of the class price in order to reschedule.
